With a grand prize of Toyota 4Runner, the Great Ontario Salmon Derby has one of the richest jackpots in the salmon fishing world and this year Islander is excited to be on board as one of the title sponsors of the event.
The GOSD is actually more like seven derbies in one. Each week anglers battle for 10 prizes with the top spot earning 10K. One of those ten prizes is $1000, an Islander MR3, and a Premier Series Rod. At the end of the 7 weeks, the biggest fish of the derby wins the grand prize while all of the weekly top 10s get entered into the Islander Shootout.
The shootout is a one day derby with a $5000 purse, and several draw prizes including an Islander TR3 and Premier Series Rod going to the winner. All told, there is over $270,000 worth of cash and prizes on the line!
The derby kicked off this past weekend and Islander’s Steve Rennalls was able to make a trip out east to get on the water with Scotty Richardson of Scotty’s Sportfishing for the event. Scotty is well-known as one of the most skilled anglers on the Lake—as one of his fellow guides put it: “the fish just always seem to be under his boat!”
Over the course of the derby, we’ll be checking in with Scotty to see how the derby is going, while also sharing a little bit about the techniques anglers are using for success on Lake Ontario and how they compare to the West Coast. For now, here are a few highlights from this trip, as well as a few from last summer, that showcase all that Lake Ontario has to offer.
If you’re in Ontario this summer—for any reason—I highly recommend you find a way to get out on the Lake, you won’t be disappointed. For more information, check out the Great Ontario Salmon Derby website.
Man guess I need to win that blackout rod getup… I can’t get that leverage with my sage rod
