At the 2024 Sport Fishing Institute of BC (SFI) Gala, our founder, Jack Foster, received the Bob Wright Legacy Award. This incredible honor recognizes Jack’s outstanding contributions to the conservation, restoration, and enhancement of BC’s recreational fishing industry—a legacy we at Islander Reels have been privileged to witness firsthand.
Reflecting, Jack shared, “I was totally surprised and overwhelmed by all of this! Islander has become so much more than what we ever expected, and the dedication of all those involved has been truly inspiring. I am truly honored to receive this award!”
A Legacy of Giving Back
Jack’s journey with Islander Reels has always been about more than just crafting world-class fishing reels. For over 35 years, he has prioritized giving back to the fishing community and protecting BC’s fisheries. Whether it’s through donating countless reels to support conservation efforts, sponsoring local derbies, or championing sustainable fishing practices, Jack’s commitment to making a difference is woven into Islander’s DNA.
Even in “retirement,” Jack’s passion for both the company and conservation efforts remains as strong as ever. He continues to play an active role in Islander Reels, ensuring that our mission to protect fisheries and support anglers stays at the forefront of what we do. His leadership, generosity, and belief in doing what’s right have left an indelible mark on Islander and the fishing community as a whole.
The Bob Wright Legacy Award
The Bob Wright Legacy Award was established by the SFI to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to BC’s recreational fishing industry. Named after Bob Wright, a trailblazer in BC’s sport fishing sector, the award highlights the importance of conservation and community in sustaining our fisheries. Jack’s recognition is a testament to his impact on the fishing industry and his dedication to preserving BC’s waters for future generations.
The Role of the Sport Fishing Institute of BC
The SFI has been a cornerstone of sustainable fishing advocacy in British Columbia since the 1980s. They’re dedicated to promoting, enhancing, and protecting sport fishing opportunities while addressing the challenges facing BC’s public fishery. Organizations like the SFI ensure that the recreational fishing community has a voice and that the social and economic, along with its role in connecting people to nature, is recognized by governments and the public.
One of their more recent initiatives is Release Them Right, a program grounded in scientific research that educates anglers on responsible catch-and-release practices. Studies have shown that proper handling techniques significantly increase survival rates for released fish, particularly for species under pressure from changing environmental conditions and fishing practices. This initiative emphasizes practical steps, such as minimizing air exposure, using appropriate gear, and handling fish gently to reduce stress and injury.
At Islander, we fully support Release Them Right and its mission to empower anglers with knowledge and encourage anglers to explore how small changes in handling can make a big difference.

A Shared Vision for the Future
Jack’s award is a reflection of the values we hold dear at Islander Reels: a love for fishing, a commitment to conservation, and a deep appreciation for the community that supports us. It’s also a reminder of the importance of organizations like the SFI, whose work ensures that BC’s waters remain a world-class fishing destination.
As we celebrate Jack’s well-deserved recognition, we also look to the future. Protecting BC’s fisheries and advocating for sustainable fishing opportunities is an ongoing effort that requires collaboration, education, and passion. Whether it’s through initiatives like Release Them Right or supporting local conservation efforts, we’re committed to doing our part.
Congratulations, Jack, on this incredible honor, and thank you to the Sport Fishing Institute of BC for recognizing his contributions. Together, let’s continue working to protect and enhance BC’s fisheries for generations to come.
